Cellar Notes - Weize Kriek

1998 Bottling / Tasted Oct 2006 (16/20)
I've done quite a bit of fruitless research on this beer on the web but I can't find a sliver of data as to its background.

Dull reddish brown - showing its age. Fruity nose of musty old cherries. Good clarity and lift. Soft friendly touches in the mouth. Cherry flavours are very upfront and obvious. Palate tightens up with some tart fruits but essentially a great example of mellow, aged kriek. The price? A mere E1.50!!!!!!!!!!! @ Kulminator.

  • Gday Stew,

I can't believe I only just found out about your blog (through your post on AHB)!

As for the beer, could it possibly be Wets Kriek? It was available in a few places when I was last in Belgium, but it would've been a lot older than 1998 - I think they stopped production about 15 years ago. I had it at Restobières in Brussels.

Otherwise, Weize appears to be a town halfway between Hasselt and Maastricht. I'm not aware of any breweries there, but according to my limited knowledge of Belgian geography it's roughly where they grow cherries. It's nowhere near the Payottenland though, so probably not a lambic-based kriek. Probably produced for the town or a festival or something by a nearby brewery. I know Kerkom does a few contract brews but I'm not sure they were doing it back then, and I don't think they have ever used cherries. The chances of it being a rebadge of an existing beer is probably high.

    Sorry to ramble so much!

  • Thanks Lach,

I'm a little sheepish about the whole thing as its rather self indulgent....anyways I'm trying to get the content up rather than promote it.

To be honest its first and foremost a aveneue to promote the beer retail side of things at Cloudwine / Slow Beer but I though there seemed to be an absence of Aussie based blogs so......anyway...might be useful to somebody.

Re the Wets / Weize you could well be right. Weize seems very German and thus not really compatible with kriek. My you, I'd had about 8 beers before hand so quite possibly failed to translate from the label correctly.

    Anniversary ale all gone BTW.

    cheers

  • No, I think it's a great idea from both a Cloudwine and a general beer perspective. I look forward to seeing what you've got to say.

If the beer had a label it almost certainly wasn't Wets Kriek.
