Dieu du Ciel Corne du Diable IPA
We’ve been waiting on this one for a while & its finally here! The Corne du Diable is a US style IPA, with rich caramel & toffee malt presence but a big citrusy, piney bitterness on the finish. Certainly one for the hopheads & given we only have 1 keg, you’ll have to be quick. We will start filling growlers of it on Saturday & continue until the keg is dry! $25 for the fill, $40 including growler.
UP NEXT WEEK: Bridge Rd B2Bomber

BEER & BREWER MAG BEST BEER VENUE – VOTE FOR US!
The brilliant beer & brewer mag is running a competition to find the best beer venue in Oz! There are a number of categories, of which we fit into the Bottle Shop (300+ beers). We would very much appreciate if you could show us some support & vote for us. After all, we are the only 100% dedicated craft beer store in Oz & also the only non-brewery in the country to be offering growler fills. If only they had categories for that! Unfortunately they don’t, so be sure to mention this & all that is great about slowbeer :)

BREWDOG PUNK IPA ON GROWLER FILLS!

BREWDOG PUNK IPA ON GROWLER FILLS!

After some great press & seemingly a long absence (it was only 1 week!), we now have a great new beer on growler fills. Many know Scotland’s Brewdog for their outlandish attitude towards brewing & perhaps it is quite apt that we are now offer their Punk IPA.

Much like many Brewdog offerings, this brew isn't your normal IPA. Being very much in the modern style, brimming with lychee, kiwi & passion fruit notes from chinook, simcoe, athanum & nelson sauvin hops. However the use of an ultra pale malt variety attributes some very delicate honey notes, letting the hops do the talking. In typical IPA fashion, the finish is long with a grassy, herbaceous bitterness.
Specs: IBUs – 68, ABV - 6%, Std drinks – 9

FILLS ARE $25 IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A SLOWBEER GROWLER

Cellar Notes - St Bernardus

Prior 8
Vintage: best before June 2010
Consumed: August 2010

Probably about 3 years old. Holding up well if a little unspectacular. Shows all the usual dubbel traits and also has a nice, albeit it mild, chocolate overlay. Carbonation is a little softer than I remember. Lacks some punch in the flavour department and I'm not sure cellaring any further will benefit.

Cellar Notes - Emersons

Old 95 Old English Ale
Vintage: 2007
Consumed: August 2010

Glad I hung onto a few bottles of this. Looking really good at 3 years although clearly a less malty / porter-like beer than I remember. Hops are in very good shape across the nose and palate although the malt lends a nice sweet supporting hand, albeit in an elegant fashion. Still very fresh to my tastes. Should see out 5 years.

SLOWBEER'S NEWS, REVIEWS & ARRIVALS

Short & sweet again this week. The addition of some great limited releases from a local, a chance to try some of Japans best craft beers & a reminder of our Mikkeller showcase session on Sunday. Also, our good friend James Smith (aka The Crafty Pint) has been busy spreading some love for us!

FEATURE BEERS
RED DUCK (VIC)
Ugly Duckling Braggot
330ml $19.50
Great to see red duck back onto the small batch releases. Braggot has been somewhat of an unknown quantity among many brewers, being that it is no more beer, than it is mead. In essence, Braggot is a spiced honey & malt beverage, with hops sometimes utilized. Certainly a common misconception about “honey beers” is that they are all sweet. On the contrary, honey is highly fermentable & often the sweetness is lost in the brewing process, while an earthy honey character remains. In this case that earthiness compliments the array of spices & traditional hops employed. As the name states, this is somewhat of a dirty looking brew, couple that with the rather high abv of 14.3% (for beer at least, not so much for mead) & you have a really intriguing & quite endearing brew!

Loch Ness Whisky Aged Scotch Ale 330ml $6.00
Indeed a match made in heaven. The guys have sourced old whisky barrels from the local Timboon Distillery & housed this brew in them for 6 weeks. The result is a beer with rich caramel/toffee notes, a hint of dark roasted malt & some lovely, subtle oak/whisky notes. Exceptional value for a barrel aged beer.

BAIRD TASTING!
NEXT FRIDAY 13th August 5-7pm
Somewhat surprisingly the Baird range of beers have flown under the radar since arriving in store. I often think that some have the mentality that US craft beers are the be all & end all, thus some real gems can go unnoticed.

In a bid to give these brews the chance they deserve, we will be having 2 of their best on tasting next week:
Baird Dark Sky Imperial Stout 650ml $19.00
Baird West Coast Wheatwine 650ml $20.00

Come by for a chat & a sample of these brilliant brews, you wont be disappointed!
